How Does 2-Ply Carbonless Paper Make Two Receipts in One Print, and When Do You Need It?

2-ply carbonless paper roll for impact printers

Some transactions need a second copy at the moment of printing. A kitchen needs the order while the server keeps the customer's copy, and a front desk needs a signed record while the guest takes a duplicate. 2 ply carbonless paper rolls produce both copies in one print job.

At NPOS Solutions, we supply 3 x 95 foot two-ply carbonless rolls to restaurants, restaurant groups, hotels and the supply companies that serve them.

Choosing the right roll depends on how the paper forms its copies, which workflows need duplicates, and which printer and ribbon the roll must match.

How a Two-Ply Carbonless Roll Creates Two Copies

A carbonless roll is wound from two layers of paper. The underside of the top sheet and the upper side of the bottom sheet carry coatings that react under pressure.

When the printer strikes the top layer through an ink ribbon, it prints on the top sheet, and the same impact transfers a matching image to the sheet beneath.

The result is two identical copies from one print, with no carbon sheets to insert or discard.

Our 3 x 95 rolls are white and yellow, so staff can tell the copies apart at a glance: the white copy can go to the customer and the yellow copy stays with the kitchen, front desk or filing tray.

Where Duplicate Receipts Serve a Purpose

Duplicate printing is most useful when two people need the same information in different places:

•     Kitchen tickets: the order prints at the cook line while the server keeps the matching copy.

•     Hotels and lodging: the guest receives a copy at check-in or check-out, and the property keeps the second.

•     Retail and service counters: the customer leaves with a receipt, and the store keeps a copy for reconciliation.

Restaurants, hotels and retail stores are the most common users of 2 ply carbonless paper rolls, and the 3 x 95 foot roll is one of the most widely used sizes for kitchen printers.

Why Carbonless Paper Needs an Impact Printer and a Ribbon

Carbonless paper reacts to pressure, not heat. It only works in impact printers, which strike the paper through an inked ribbon, and it will not print in a thermal printer.

A worn or dry ribbon produces faint copies on both layers, so a fresh ribbon matters as much as the paper.

We also carry the Epson ERC-30/34/38 ribbon cartridge in red and black, packed 12 per case, so you can order paper and ribbons together.

Check the printer manual for the exact ribbon model each printer requires. Because the image forms by pressure rather than heat, a carbonless kitchen ticket does not darken near a hot cook line.

What to Check Before You Order

•     Width and length: the printer must take 3 inch paper, and the 95 foot length should suit daily print volume.

•     Core size: the core is 7/16 inch; the printer's spindle or holder must accept it.

•     Printer model: our 3 x 95 roll fits many impact printers from Citizen, Epson, IBM, Micros, NCR, Panasonic, Samsung, Star Micronics and other manufacturers, including the Epson TM-U220 and Star Micronics SP700. Confirm the model before ordering.

•     Ribbon: keep matching ribbons on hand so every printer prints clearly.

•     Case quantity: rolls are packed 50 per case.

For Restaurant Groups and Restaurant Supply Companies

Kitchen paper is a recurring, predictable purchase, which makes it ideal for volume buying:

•     One order for the whole kitchen setup: two-ply carbonless, one-ply bond (3 x 165 and 3 x 194), three-ply carbonless (3 x 65, white, yellow and pink) and ribbons can ship together.

•     Volume pricing on the total order: pricing is based on the total cases in the order, in any mix of products.

•     Pallet pricing: orders of 63 cases or more qualify for pallet pricing, and mixed pallets are welcome.

•     Delivery to each location: restaurant groups can schedule deliveries to every store with one account manager.

•     Resellers: restaurant supply companies can buy at wholesale pricing, with blind drop-shipping available on request.

Storage and Handling

Carbonless coatings respond to pressure and friction, so stray marks can appear if rolls are stacked under heavy weight or rubbed against rough surfaces.

Keep rolls in their cases until needed, store them in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight, and load each roll with the white layer on top as the printer manual directs.

FAQs

Can I use two-ply carbonless paper in a thermal printer?

No. Carbonless paper forms its image through pressure from an impact printer and an ink ribbon. If the printer is thermal, use thermal paper instead.

Which printers does your 3 x 95 carbonless roll fit?

It fits many impact printers from Citizen, Epson, IBM, Micros, NCR, Panasonic, Samsung, Star Micronics and other manufacturers, including the Epson TM-U220 and Star Micronics SP700. Send us the make and model to confirm.

Do I need a separate ribbon?

Yes. Impact printers print through an ink ribbon. We carry the Epson ERC-30/34/38 cartridge in red and black, 12 per case.

What if I only need one copy?

Use one-ply bond paper. We carry 3 x 165 and 3 x 194 foot bond rolls for impact printers.

Do you sell carbonless paper wholesale?

Yes. Restaurant groups and supply companies can buy by the case or by the pallet, with pricing based on the total cases in the order.
